Why are Celebrities Frequenting the Kabbalah Centre?

February 26, 2017 - Author: steph - No Comments

Kabbalah Centre is a non-for-profit organization based in Los Angeles. It provides courses on Kabbalistic teachings and the Zohar. The lessons are available online as well as through Kabbalah’s regional centers and study groups around the world. The roots of the Kabbalah Centre can be traced back to 1922 when Rav Yehuda Ashlag founded it. He was the first Kabbalist to modernize the practice and make it more accessible. He passed his mantle of leadership to his student, Rav Yehuda Tzvi Brandwein, who later apprenticed Rav Berg. This lineage stems the history of Kabbalah Centre.

Madonna

Over the years, Hollywood celebrities have been fascinated about this practice. One of the first famous figures to embrace Kabbalah was Madonna. The Jewish mysticism enthralled her, and this led her to open up several Kabbalah Centers where she studied the ancient Jewish tradition. After this brave move, many other Hollywood stars such as Britney Spears, the late Sammy Davis, Paris Hilton, the late Elizabeth Taylor, as well as Sandra Benhard followed suit. This only led to the question; ‘why are celebrities increasingly becoming interested in and joining the Kabbalah practice?’

Britney Spear

Britney said that she was interested in the peaceful nature of the practice. She believed in the need to help others and was in the quest for that much-needed peace in an otherwise chaotic world. These virtues only seemed available in the Kabbalah practice. She was introduced to it by her long-time friend, Madonna. She read books and took the time to meditate.

Marilyn Monroe

Marilyn Monroe felt that she had no connection with “fundamentalist Christianity” in which she was brought up with. She was attracted to the Jewish concept of having a close family life, and this led her to convert into the Kabbalah practice. She also liked the works of Albert Einstein which profoundly influenced her decision.

Sammy Davis

Sammy Davis frequented the Kabbalah Centre because he wanted to become part of the 5,000-year-old history and hold onto something that was not just material. He said that the Kabbalah practice gave him inner peace and strength. The Jews have been strong through years of oppression, and he wanted to be part of that strength. Being and African America, a race which has also seen its fair share of abuse, Sammy felt emotionally tied to Judaism and the Kabbalah practice.
