End Citizens United Continues Battle For Campaign Finance ReformSeptember 6, 2017 - Author: steph
What does the name Citizens United mean to you? The sad, and understandable, truth is that most average American voters have never heard of the name before. What Citizens United is, fundamentally, is one of the biggest problems to ever happen in Washington D.C. The American political machine was rendered a great blow back in 2010 when a man named James Bopp and his group Citizens United argued before the Supreme Court in order to take down regulations that keep our voting institutions safe and representative of our populace. You probably haven’t heard that much about this so we’ll walk you through why things are that way nowadays.
Tara Malloy runs the Campaign Legal Center and she defined Bopp’s work as, “A very broad-based litigation assault being waged against both state and federal campaign finance laws.” In summation that pretty much covers what Bopp and the right wing Citizens United group have been up to. However, that fully doesn’t represent the depths of what Bopp is attempting to make happen. Let’s go back to 2008 when Bopp approached the Federal Election Commission in order to try and air a smear piece during the Democratic primaries.

It was 2008 and James Bopp was standing before the FEC. He was desperately trying to air his ‘film’, ‘Hillary: The Movie’, at the same time that the Democratic primaries were underway. The ‘film’, and we quote this intentionally, was nothing more than 90 minutes of insults and slander hurled toward Hillary Clinton. The FEC took one look at the transcript of the film and laughed Bopp out of the court room. What Bopp was trying to do was fundamentally wrong. He was trying to circumnavigate campaign laws by packing his propaganda as a legitimate piece of art. The FEC saw right through that. Unfortunately that wasn’t the end of the conversation.
In 2010 Bopp and his group would come better prepared to stand before the Supreme Court. Bopp successfully argued and fought against campaign financing regulations. The shackles came off. Dark money would soon fly into politics. Since 2010 we can see a marked depreciation in the quality of political discourse in our country and the proportionate amount of politicians being bought off by special interests. Bopp calls this ‘freedom’ but every sane American knows this decision was just the blessing that Big Money needed in order to subvert the votes and will of the American people.
That’s where End Citizens United comes into the picture. This political action committee is being run by Tiffany Muller and her singular focus is on repealing the Citizens United decision of 2010. Through the first three months of 2017 Muller and her PAC have raised $4 million of their $35 million goal to make this happen.
