An Overview of the Career of Terry Richardson: One of My Favorite Photographers

December 5, 2014 - Author: steph

Profiling one of my favorite photogs today.  If you want to check him out, recommend this book, and make sure that you follow his Instagram feed.  Posts some really cool stuff on there.

But down to business.

Terry Richardson is a fashion and portrait photographer who was born in New York City in 1965. His father, Bob Richardson, was also a fashion photographer while his mother Norma Kessler was an actress.

When he was 16, he and his mother moved to Ojai, California where he attended Nordhoff High School. Around this time, he got involved in the punk scene and discovered photography. His mother supposedly gave him his first camera in 1982, and he used it to take pictures of his fellow punk rockers. At the time, though, he wanted to be a punk rock musician, rather than a photographer. He played bass guitar in a band called the Invisible Government for four years.

In 1992, Richardson quit music and moved to New York City’s East Village, where he began taking pictures of the city’s nightlife and people partying. Two years later, he got his first big break when Vibe published his fashion photos. That Vibe spread was later shown at the International Festival de la Mode in Paris. Afterwards, he shot an advertising campaign for fashion designer Katherine Hamnett’s 1995 spring collection. That campaign attracted attention because of the pictures of young women wearing very short skirts that showed their pubic hair.

After working with Hamnett, Richardson moved to London, where he worked for European magazines like The Face, I-D, and Arena. Over the years, he has also shot photos for magazines like Rolling Stone, Vogue, Vanity Fair, GQ and Harper’s Bazaar. He has shot fashion spreads for designers like Yves Saint Laurent, Aldo, Tom Ford, and Marc Jacob. In 2007, he won a Silver Lion for Print at the Cannes Lions International Advertising Festival for his work with the Italian clothing company Diesel.

In 1998, Richardson held his first gallery showing at Alleged Galley in New York. At the same time, he published his first book, Hysteric Glamour. The following year, he had his first show in Paris at the Galarie Emmanuel Perrotin. Over the years, he has published about a dozen books, with the most recent being Lady Gaga x Terry Richardson.

Since the late 1990’s, Richardson has also directed music videos. He has worked with such artists as Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift, Thirty Seconds to Mars, and Primal Scream. He married the model Nikki Uberti in 1996, but they divorced three years later.

Lessons in Wearing Denim From Alexander Wang

December 4, 2014 - Author: steph
Alexander Wang will release his first line of denim. The ads for the jeans feature model Anna Ewers in jeans–and nothing else. Ewers is seated on a leather chair and shows off her glistening torso and calves while showing off Alexander Wang’s dark denim. The jeans will likely make their way onto the runway during Fashion Weeks for years to come, to be paired with both casual and dressy accessories.

Wang has also launched the Jock Jam line for H&M. Mark Ahn says the clothing is laid-back and relaxed, but features an air of high fashion. This can bring a chic element to athletic gear, and may even motivate some to visit the gym more often. The Jock Jam line also features duffel bags.

Jeans from Alexander Wang are available at a number of fine department stores, such as Neiman Marcus and Nordstrom. The denim is available for sale at live locations and online.
