Ricardo Tosto: Law Schools in BrazilOctober 19, 2017 - Author: steph
Brazil is one of the nations with the largest number of lawyers in the world. This situation can be attributed to the high number of law schools in the country. It is estimated that there are over a million lawyers currently in Brazil. It ranks in the top list of countries with the highest number of lawyers, alongside the United States and India. According to statistics, there are more law schools in Brazil than there are in all the countries in the world combined. There are over a thousand law schools in the country as of 2010.
Although there is a huge number of lawyers in Brazil, not all of them are allowed to practice law. Only a small percentage of them have complied with the regulations that guide registration of lawyers in the country. The regulator in the country has approved about eight hundred thousand lawyers. This means that most law students have not yet been approved to practice.
The process of qualifying as a lawyer in Brazil is usually very rigorous. According to regulations set by the Brazilian Bar Association, one must undergo five years undergraduate in an institution recognized by the institution and graduate with a law degree. After graduating with a law degree, the next phase involves joining a law school. At the end of studies at a law school, one is required to sit for the bar exam. It is mandatory to pass this bar exam for one to be recognized by the Bar Association. Only those who pass given the certificate to represent clients in court. After law schools, though not mandatory, law students are expected to join various law firms as interns.
