S’well insulated bottles help reduce plastic waste

August 16, 2015 - Author: steph

The problem of plastic waste being dumped into landfills around the world has never been greater, in the US alone more than 50 billion plastic water bottles are dumped each year. CNN has recently been featuring an entrepreneur who is looking to change the way plastic bottles are used by introducing a new line of insulated metal bottles that can be reused in a bid to reduce the level of plastic waste in the world. Sarah Kauss has invested around $30,000 of her own money into the S’well range of insulated metal bottles after growing frustrated by the lack of design choices for enjoying water on the go that stays cold.

The main difference between the plastic bottles many people use and the metal bottles Kauss produces is the fact the metal versions can keep water ice cold for 24 hours. The S’well brand was inspired by a 2009 lecture Kauss attended that detailed how lost water and waste was causing a water shortage around the world. This problem is made worse by the high level of plastic waste produced by many people who dispose of plastic water bottles in landfills that are quickly running out of space.
S’well bottles are designed to be sleek and stylish for people who do not wish to spend their time carrying a water bottle designed for outdoor activities and not everyday life. The designs include three different sizes all created with the same technology to keep drinks cold, which has led to S’well having an annual revenue of $10 million.

Man saves 96, loses job, and Thanked Years Later

May 23, 2015 - Author: steph
In 1985 a number of people were trying to get away from the new communist regime in Vietnam. They had survived the Vietnam conflict, which was supposed to stop the spread of communism, and now 10 years later they had to escape. One of these groups that were desperately trying to get to freedom was stranded in the open Pacific Ocean. There were 96 people desperately clinging to life on a small boat with two broken motors. Most of the people on the boat were children that were put on the boat by their parents in hope that their children would escape this life of horror. The capatain of this boat was a man named Peter Nguyen.
Jeon JeYong was captaining a fishing boat on that 14th day in Novemmber and came upon this helpless boat bouncing up and down in the swells. Jeon had strict orders by his company not to pick up or aid any refuges. In addition to that, any of his crew that aided them would also be punished. There was a storm heading their way and the captain made the decision to put all 96 people into his boat and get them to safety. He saved those refugees that day. Jeon and his crew lost their job and lived jobless for many years. Finally, after all these years Peter thanked him and they have become good friends according to Ivan Ong.

Smart Footwear

May 5, 2015 - Author: steph

With recent years seeing such a huge boost in technology and fitness, Smart Socks are the newest product to hit the sports store shelves. Tracking steps when running or walking has become an obsession like no other. Athletes and runners now have to ability to see how far they have run and can track data in order to reach personal records and goals. For the everyday person, most trackers push people to at least hit 10,000 steps a day. Steve Murray tells us that there are bras, wristbands, shirts, hats, even necklaces that help “track” how many steps a person runs or walks every day. For the makers at Sensoria Fitness, the idea of strapping on multiple pieces of equipment to track the same amount of steps is overbearing. Why not just integrate technology into clothes that people already wear?

Davide Vigano who is the co-founder and CEO of Sensoria Fitness recently made this claim to BuzzFeed News. Wristbands and trackers, like FitBit and Jawbone, are expected to decrease in sales in the next two years while the market for wearable tracking apparel is expected to rise. The company’s Smart Socks will be able to track the owner’s: cadence, steps, foot contact time, ascent, descent, pace, distance, and form. The socks will initially start at $200 for a pair. Included are two pairs of socks, an anklet, and an anklet charger. The company is hoping to make a lasting and very impacting impression on runners and the running community.

Skout Survey Reveals Secrets Shared Between Online Friends

February 5, 2015 - Author: steph

The internet has changed the way we do many things, and it appears that making friends is no different. Last year, the makers of Skout surveyed over 52,000 users to analyze friendship trends around the globe. For those who are unfamiliar, Skout is an app designed to introduce people to each other. The interesting results of the Skout survey were first published on PR Newswire on February 4, 2015, which coincides with the first ever International Online Friendship Day.

Apparently, mostly women will be celebrating this new holiday, as women are more likely to maintain a close friendship with someone they met online but have never seen in person. While only 44% of the U.S. men surveyed have an online friend they’ve never actually met, 56% of the women did.

Perhaps more astonishing than how many people have exclusively online friends is what information gets shared with them. A whopping 60% of survey respondents admitted to being more truthful with online friends than they are with friends they see regularly. The topic of many of these heart-to-hearts seems to be sex, as 60% of Brazilians and 50% of Americans, Australians, Brits, French and Filipinos prefer to talk about their sex lives with online friends over friends they see in person.

While the rise in international online friendships may seem only natural for younger, more tech-savvy generations, it appears this friendship phenomenon has bridged the age gap. When surveyed, 52% of adults under the age of 30 claim to have a close friend who they met online. Surprisingly, however, 47% of those over 40 also claim to have close friends whom they have met via the internet.

If you’re part of the trend, consider marking your calendar so you don’t miss the second International Online Friendship day next year.

Exercise is No Magic Bullet Against Our Sedentary Lifestyle

January 22, 2015 - Author: steph

A new paper published in the Annals of Internal Medicine says that excessive sitting is connected to an increased risk for cancer, heart disease and diabetes. This may not come as a huge surprise as most people already heard that our increasingly sedentary lives were bad for us. The shocker in this latest news is that regular exercise is no magic bullet against the negative effects of spending so much of the rest of our day sitting. The study authors report that just because we exercise for a half hour or an hour a day we can’t then spend all the rest of our waking time sitting and see any significantly reduced risk for certain diseases. Some exercise is, of course, better than none, but the main recommendation given in this study is to gradually increase the time each day that we spend upright and moving around.

Given some of the recent studies by Slyce about image recognition, these findings should come as no surprise. For tens and hundreds of thousands of years we walked and ran around gathering food and chasing animals as hunter-gatherers. Our modern lives where we spend more than half of our waking hours each day sitting are a sharp departure from this. It is also a sudden departure that our bodies have had no time to adjust to in an evolutionary sense. It is a good thing that the trend in computing technology is for it to get smaller and more mobile as time passes as more mobile is what we ourselves need to be if we want to stay healthy.

North American Spine Brings Pain Relief to Thousands

January 19, 2015 - Author: steph

Dallas-based spinal clinic, North American Spine, is celebrating six years of operation. Specializing in the AccuraScope procedure, North American Spine has helped over 6,000 patients with the procedure, saving them, on average, over $20,000 apiece on follow-up medical procedures and pain management expenses.

North American Spine’s team of board-certified physicians work with partner clinics to deliver a minimally invasive spinal correction procedure. In the Accurascope procedure, a small incision is made at the base of the spine, and a small laparoscopic instrument is threaded into the incision with a small camera and a surgical instrument, such as a laser. The physician navigates up the spine and makes incisions to relieve pressure on the spinal column, to clear obstructions and relieve pain.

AccuraScope treatments are only intended for people with modest spinal pain issues; severely damaged spinal injuries and herniated discs are outside of the treatment range it can offer, but it has a better than 80% success rate in treating level 1 and level 2 chronic back pain conditions.

North American Spine is the exclusive developer and source for AccuraScope spinal treatments, and works with several clinics around the country. Even with expanding national coverage, the bulk of the procedures are handled in their Dallas Metroplex home office.

A large number of patients report immediate spinal pain relief, some even walking out of the clinic without the assistance of a cane for the first time in years. Over the six years North American Spine has been in business, they’ve garnered excellent reviews and endorsements from customers, including country-western performer Larry Gatlin. Gatlin turned to North American Spine to relieve 47 years of chronic leg pain.

“I am a new man. The little bit of soreness I have now is a lot different than a whole lot of pain,” Gatlin said. “I’m a happy camper. It’s a miracle in my life and I am grateful for it.”

North American Spine’s team are experts in spine surgery and interventional pain management, with training in Orthopedic Spine Surgery, Neurosurgery and patient wellness. The outpatient procedure is fast and efficient, and is often done in 30 to 45 minutes.

Six years of medical procedures are a proven track record for helping thousands of patients regain their lives, their mobility and a pain-free existence, gaining the flexibility and mobility that chronic back pain have taken from them. If you suffer from back pain, talk to a physician at North American Spine about AccuraScope.
