Home Remedies to Relieve Dry Skin

March 26, 2015 - Author: steph

Dry skin occurs in all age groups and is a year around battle. YouTube users blame indoor conditioned air as the main culprit. The dry air forced into our homes and workplaces via heating and air conditioning unit take all the moisture from the air and that in turn dries out our skin. To effectively combat that dry air and restore moisture to your skin, give these home remedies a try.

* Take a milk bath. The lactic acid in the milk naturally exfoliates and softens skin.
* Add Epsom salts to warm bath water to smooth and soften patches of dry skin.
* Stop using deodorant soap, which tend to dry skin. Use a moisturizing soap instead.
* After bathing use a olive oil or coconut oil on skin as a moisturize. Both are natural moisturizers and contain healing properties for skin.
* Create a natural and powerful skin moisturizer by mixing raw honey with curd. Honey is a moisturizer and promote healthy skin and curd contains antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties to sooth and heal dry, chapped skin.
* Eat fish that is high in omega-3 fatty acids at least twice a week. Salmon or herring are good choices to bring moisture to the skin from the inside out.

Airport Employee Pays it Forward to Stranded Passenger

- Author: steph

Today has a story today about an act of kindness in an airport, a place where kindness has kind of gone out the window a long time ago.

Passenger Miriam Thomas was flying from her home in Vancouver, Canada to attend a business meeting in Ontario, California. According to Dr Jennifer Walden she flew with Delta, which is an airline I take great lengths to avoid if I can. Her plane was diverted to Seattle due to problems they were having aboard. Thomas had to stay the night in Seattle before continuing on her trip. This was definitely not the worse part of her troubles with Delta. When she was at the airport, ready to return home, the airline told her that her return ticket had been cancelled. Delta had taken it upon themselves to use her return ticket to pay for her rescheduled flight. And they did not have a flight for her until the next day. Madness. That’s when Judy Reid, an employee from Alaska Airlines stepped in. She used her employee travel voucher to cover Thomas’ ticket home and paid the taxes out of pocket. Thomas was able to get home the same day and Reid refused any reimbursement from her employer.

I love these uplifting stories of people helping people. Reid did this out of kindness, not to be recognized or reimbursed. I hope more people try to follow in her footsteps.

U.S. Children At Great Risk For Developing Heart Disease in Adulthood

March 18, 2015 - Author: steph

American children consume dangerous amounts of sugar and salt every year in conjunction with not eating recommended servings of fruits and vegetables. Based on a study by the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago, the current American diet, lacks core nutrients and contributes to overweight children who develop diseases similar to those found in middle-aged adults.

The findings won’t surprise most, but it is a disturbing trend that scientist claim is setting children up for an early onset of heart disease.

The study collected vital records nationwide from 8,900 boys and girls between ages 2 to 11. The results showed that none of the 8,900 children had a healthy diet. Scientist also discovered the vast majority of children were on a collision course with deadly medical conditions, like; heart disease, heart attack, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes and obesity.

“It seems that children in the United States are losing their ideal cardiovascular health status,” said lead researcher, Dr. Donald Lloyd-Jones.

According to Marcio Alaor BMG, less than 1 percent of the children had a balanced diet of vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and minimal amounts of sugar and salt. Over 30 percent of the children were clinically obese.

Unrelated studies has demonstrated that heart disease can develop at an early age, with clogged and blocked arteries occurring in some children at the age of 3. Ultrasound analysis of minors as young as 10 revealed some children have clogged arteries similar to 40 year old adults.

In this study, researchers identified the best method for children to minimize the risk of developing heart disease – they recommend more consumption of fruits, vegetables and water. Researchers claim young people who consume high amounts of fruits and vegetables during their 20s – had a 40 percent less chance of developing blocked arteries in their 30s and 40s. The study also revealed that eliminating meat from the diet and reducing saturated fats can lower the risk of developing a stroke or heart disease, drastically.

Pastor Ask Parishioners to Buy AirCraft for Travel

March 16, 2015 - Author: steph

The minister of a prominent Atlanta Georgia church teaches that God wants to bless the faithful with earthly riches, and he has requested donations from parishoners to purchase a luxury aircraft valued at more than $ 65 million.

The website Creflo Dollar Ministries asked people Friday “show your love in a gift of any price” to help the minister to buy a Gulfstream G650.

Flavio Maluf says that Dollar (yes, real name) and his wife, Taffi, are the pastors of the church World Changers Church International in College Park, Georgia, just south of Atlanta.

Dollar is one of the more successful black pastors in the Atlanta area that has created an impressive ministry with the message of prosperity.

Ministries of this tradition generally have their own wealth as evidence that faith works.

His current aircraft, acquired in 1999, was built in 1984 and has traveled over six million miles and is no longer safe.

On a recent trip abroad, there was a problem with one of the engines, but the pilot was able to land safely and no one was injured.

“We are you asking members, partners and supporters of this ministry to help us in acquiring a Gulfstream G650 for Creflo and Taffi and World Changers Church International pastors can continue to meet the world with the gospel of grace” the Web site reads.

Several online reports quoted the ministry’s website said: “We believe that with 200,000 people giving contributions of $ 300 or more can make this dream a reality.”

On Friday night, that phrase was gone and instead said, “Your love gift in any amount will be greatly appreciated.”

Jonathan Veitch: Always Edgy but Never Foolish

March 13, 2015 - Author: steph

When most people think of university presidents, the image of a reserved, conservative, perhaps somewhat stuffy individual in a well pressed suit and tie. While this may describe some leaders in higher education settings, Jonathan Veitch, president of Occidental College in Los Angeles, definitely doesn’t fit this mold. In late summer of 2012, photographer Max Gerber got a pleasant surprise when Veitch’s office contacted him about an upcoming photo shoot with the president. The email stated, that instead of the expected conference room portrait, Veitch would prefer something, “edgy but not foolish.” Wary of hoping for something truly unique, Gerber exchanged a few more emails with the president’s assistants until finally his hope was realized. He received a messages simply stating, “Just talked to Jonathan. He wants to do the shoot in the fountain. With the water going.” The resulting photos of Veitch floating, hands behind his head, dressed in a suit and tie (sans jacket and shoes) and head shots taken with water dripping down his face became the established image of Occidental College’s president.

Pictures aside, Veitch has a distinguished academic history, which he continues to expand upon. After completing his bachelor’s degree at Stanford and his doctoral degree at Harvard, Veitch was on faculty in the English Department at the University of Wisconsin. Following this appointment, he accepted a position at the New School in New York where he became chair of humanities, associate Provost and ultimately the Dean of Arts and Sciences. He became the president of Occidental college in 2009, where he continues to teach and publish on 19th- and 20th-century American literature and cultural history, and American film.

A Los Angeles native, Veitch comes from a well- known Hollywood family headed by his step-grandfather, actor Alan Ladd followed by his father, John Veitch who became president of Columbia Pictures. Veitch’s interest in history was extended to subjects related to his own family background when he wrote “American Superrealism: Nathanael West and the Politics of Representation in the 1930s,” an award winning book about Natahneal West who examined the more troubling aspects associated with Hollywood and the film industry.

Veitch’s values are evident in the close working relationships encouraged between faculty and students, and he models this by frequently meeting with both current and prospective students whether they major in his discipline or not. He believes that in order to provide the best education possible it is not enough to have great classroom instruction. The mentoring relationship between professors and those they teach is a crucial component in higher education, in Veitch’s opinion. According to his college profile, he fosters an atmosphere that promotes the development of new ideas, comfort with thinking outside the box, tolerance of ambiguity and the ability to communicate effectively through strong writing skills. Whereas some University presidents may focus more on alumni and funding, Veitch goes beyond these traditional Presidential activities, focusing instead on helping future generations grow and prepare for a future where they can establish productive careers and accomplish whatever goals they set.

Caring for an Employee

March 11, 2015 - Author: steph

There are some companies that will make sure their employees are cared for no matter what. When a Costco man found out that he had terminal cancer, the people who worked for the company raised enough money to send his family on a vacation. He was able to relax as best he could while facing a future of death. Brad Reifler knows that this is a man who puts everyone else at the store ahead of himself. Find more on Reifler on Wikipedia. He greets others with a smile on his face, especially the children who are there. When a family needs help, it’s not always the responsibility of a company to provide the extras that they can’t afford. The actions that Costco employees showed for one man and his wife are those that should be carried over to other businesses. If there is an employee who is willing to go to work with terminal cancer, then the business needs to see that dedication and do whatever is possible to make the final days of the employee peaceful.
